URBAN GALLERY HOSTS OPENING RECEPTION FOR BRIAN GIBSON’S SOLO SHOW “ICONS” FOR PRIDE MONTH

Throughout June, Toronto celebrates its LGBTQ community and each year URBAN GALLERY hosts an art exhibition as part of the city’s PRIDE festivities. Pride2019-CommunityEventLogo_Black with colour copy

This year, hyper-realist portrait artist BRIAN GIBSON is launching his ongoing project ICONS featuring legends from Hollywood and the music industry. This past Saturday, the gallery was filled with Brian’s family, friends and fans, along with a DJ spinning tunes by some of his artistic subjects. Brian (below left) and his partner, Danny (below right) enjoyed sharing stories behind each portrait and how each star has impacted Brian’s work in this special ongoing series of paintings.  20190608_164818Portraiture has been a historic representation of society and the continuing similarities found in the human experience. Gallery curator Allen Shugar (below R) really enjoyed hanging this show and being surrounded by such famous faces…as did gallery director Calvin Hambrook (below L)20190608_15513220190608_153236 20190608_153115 20190608_153227 20190608_154843Even a young Sophia Loren made an appearance alongside Judy Garland (below)20190608_153111The guests were enthralled by the uncanny likenesses…20190608_153212 20190608_153527…and Brian was happy to chat with everyone and pose for photos…20190608_15434620190608_16441620190608_154328The whole gallery was a-buzz with people sharing memories of concerts attended or movies they watched starring these “icons”…20190608_154356 20190608_154426 20190608_163349 20190608_164121

“It’s a Party” with Toronto digital artist GINA GODFREY

I had the pleasure of visiting the studio of artist GINA GODFREY yesterday, and she was gracious enough to show me around personally. Working with digitally manipulated collages that she painstakingly crafts first, Gina creates provocative, colourful large format artwork to fit any home or commercial space.20161026_13461520161026_134554Gina was the first international artist to show at the red-carpeted halls of the Jerusalem Theater in 2007 in Israel. Her works are also on permanent display in the Ohel Moishe Synagogue in Shanghai, China. Her works are on display and in collections in Israel, England and throughout North America including the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto.
Her current show (closing the first week of November) is called “It’s A Party” and features numerous pieces (giclee on canvas) that stimulate conversation and definitely promote a party mood!image001I absolutely adored her series of 4 “fishy” images, appropriated titled Fishy Fishy One, Two…etc.20161026_134912…as well as her moody smaller pieces like High Pigment and Incognito 2 (below)20161026_140429Here, let Gina tell you about her creative process herself….

Thank you, Gina. We then went into her backroom where she pulled out some amazing images she created of pop-culture icons that we all know, such as Sophia Loren, Brooke Shields and Canada’s own literary lion, Mordecai Richler (below)20161026_140218 20161026_140307 20161026_140400The prints of Sophia and Mordecai were done on handcrafted Japanese paper and in person, were so stunning to see. Sadly, my photos don’t do them justice here.

Gina is involved with a number of important causes and charities including this year’s The Brain Project. Her brain sculpture (see below – courtesy Toronto Sun) was part of an awareness program by Baycrest Health Sciences aimed at sparking a nationwide conversation about brain health and research. Her sculpture was on view this past summer at Toronto City Hall Square.Sun

She has just launched another project to raise funds and awareness for therapy dogs called Dogs on the Catwalk, again benefiting a Baycrest Health Sciences initiative www.baycrest.org/dogsonthecatwalk/   Bravo, Gina!

You can learn more about Gina’s digital artwork and upcoming shows as well as her passion for philanthropy by visiting her website and following her on social media.   www.ginagodfrey.com
