WALK THE AISLES WITH ME @ THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S SHOW, TORONTO

What a fun weekend I’ve had…yesterday it was The Gem Expo and today – the National Women’s Show in downtown Toronto www.nationalwomenshow.com/toronto-visitor.  I arrived around 10:30am at the Metro Convention Centre (south bldg) to find it was already jam-packed with visitors (see below), all enjoying the food samples, cosmetic freebies, fashion styling advice, home accessories, financial advice…all manner of information for the woman on the go. Join me as I take you on a virtual stroll along the aisles and meet some of the vendors who impressed me this year….20171112_102927The first booth to catch my eye was www.snobstuff.com who displayed these stunning candle covers, some of which were made into electric lamps, too.20171112_103247And although I was surrounded by bling yesterday, I still had time to stop by and admire these sparklies at www.ThePinkTreeCouture.com!20171112_103418 20171112_103443I always have time for fudge! Here’s the lady from www.oldenglishfudge.com  No wonder she’s smiling…it was deelish!20171112_103814 20171112_103819I then met Anne of Anne’s Bespoke Cookie Delights, who bakes the most yummy cookies, all made to order including the “heart-pop” cookie on a stick (pictured below). She’s part of a bakers’ collective here in Toronto and she takes great pride in speedy deliveries for her cookie clients. www.caniwantsomeyummy.ca 20171112_104213 20171112_104203 20171112_104219Next we have Veneise George who was sampling her Yawdi’s spicy marinades and jellies.  www.yawdi.ca 20171112_104453 20171112_104531What a delight to meet designer Kaela Kay whose fashions incorporate many fabrics from her homeland, Ghana. Suck beautiful, vivid colours – perfect for brightening up the Toronto winter blahs! www.kaelakay.com20171112_10490220171112_104906The NYDJ jeans lady told me just how comfortable they are to wear – you can tell from her smile she’s happy!  They’re now available from The Bay, Nordstrom’s and other stores in Canada.20171112_105306 20171112_105312 20171112_105319And now…presenting the Laraglam Collection! Wow…every girl should have a sparkly blinged out bra like this, yes?  Why not pick out your own at www.laraglam.com20171112_105544 20171112_105612Meet the lady herself, Miss Lara (pictured above) who was just as sparkly as her collection and eager to share her designs with me. I’ll let her tell you all about her goodies herself…

20171112_110035Here’s Ashley from www.fashiontruckcanada.com. What a great idea – a movable feast of fab fashionable finds. 20171112_110549(0) 20171112_110733Big shout-out to the women officers from Peel Regional Police who were on-site to promote careers in policing as well as do a little community relations work. Bravo, ladies, and thank you for your service.20171112_110840Look what I found – brand new drinkies for the health-conscious! www.CraftyElk.com takes fresh exotic fruits then blends them with vodka to make these three deelish drinks. Very low in sugar and certified organic. Mike, the fellow in red (below) is a fellow Aussie, so I just had to stop and try some…..OMG, so yummy. Available now at your local LCBO.20171112_111221_001 20171112_111834Then Founder and CEO of Crafty Elk, Greg Gilliland, came by so I grabbed him for a quick interview….

Hic….hic! After imbibing several shots of my new fave drink, I turned the corner to find yet another great boozy booth, this time the folks at Wyborowa Vodka – the best ambassador Poland ever had!  Look for it in your LCBO store or online at www.wybo.com 20171112_112343 20171112_112449The Lavish Bath Company was well represented at the show – just look at these fun “bubble bars”, soaps and their great Christmas gift ideas.  www.LavishBathCompany.com20171112_112927 20171112_112935 20171112_113000Now for something hot’n’spicy – Cool Runnings Foods offered a wide selection of tastings featuring marinades, seasonings, mustards and more. Check out their full line at www.coolrunningsfoods.com and look for them in your grocery store.20171112_113253 20171112_113123 20171112_113113The ladies at the www.TKFursAccessories.com booth were so welcoming … and fun! And owner Tina Koumandaros (pictured below on the left) is generously donating 10% of net sales to support CAMH for mental health research. Bravo, Tina!20171112_113718 20171112_113745(0)According to the TK ladies, fuzzy furry balls (pictured above) are the hottest purse accessory for young fashion-fwd women and they certainly brought a great selection to the show.

Glow Academy – school of professional artistic beauty – was well represented and visitors got to sit down and have a fab make-up make-over!  If you’re interested in learning more about a career in beauty, check out their website www.glow-academy.ca 20171112_113945I’m always interested in learning about anything therapeutic for horses or dogs andI ran into Lisa Vandenberg (below left) a doTERRA Wellness advocate and owner of www.hopeandhealingways.com. She offers essential oils for use on equines, dogs and cats.  Her colleage, Koon Fu Lee (lower picture) also works with dogs, healing thru various therapies and using Kangen Water which helps detoxify your furry friends. Find out more at www.waterandhealth.ca20171112_114416 20171112_114606(0)www.natures-source.com had a huge booth offering all sorts of effective natural alternatives to pharmaceutical potions for healing and supporting health deficiencies. I’m definitely going to check them out for help with my gut (been on Nexium for too many years) as well as my allergies and asthma.20171112_115814 20171112_115906Ship ahoy! Here’s Capt. Matthew Flinders (any good Aussie will know who he was) who was promoting Mariposa Cruises. I was aboard the Capt. Matthew Flinders boat when it was first brought to Toronto’s Harbourfront many years ago, and during the summer months, I frequently play hooky and take a quick mid-week harbour & island cruise on their little boat, the Oriole, just to clear my head and get away from the loud traffic noises at Yonge & Bloor. Always a lot of fun and very affordable.  www.mariposacruises.com20171112_120127 20171112_120215Time for a quick nibble and I was lured into the KFI booth by the fragrant aroma of curry! Yummmmm.  You can purchase their deelish sauces from your grocery store or check out their products at www.kfisauces.com20171112_120413 20171112_120419And speaking of spicy…I found my new food addiction – SHANA Foods naan and samosas! www.shanafoods.com 20171112_120816I even got to dance with the friendly SHANA booth staff, too! Bhangra music anyone?

Now for a little beauty treat for myself…big thank you to Lynn Cartwright, N. American Business Mgr of Gold Collagen, which will soon be available in Canadian pharmacies. www.gold-collagen.com offers all sorts of wonderful face tightening, hydrating and detoxing masks and serums and Lynn and her colleagues gave me some samples which I will definitely be using. 20171112_12134620171112_12135120171112_121412(0)Here’s Lynn (above left) who is a brilliant walking billboard for her product.

And speaking of beauty, these handsome fellas are from Rodan+Fields which offers life-changing skin care in a variety of products (perfect for my aging outer layers…LOL). I met consultants Bill (left) and John Joseph (right) last year at the Nat’l Women’s Show, just before they headed off to Australia to intro the products to that int’l market.20171112_122527Here are some of the Rodan+Fields products – check their website for info at www.holygrailforskin.com20171112_122544 20171112_122549 20171112_122553(0) 20171112_122633I’m all for learning more about wealth mgmn’t and investing, and you couldn’t ask for a friendlier team than the gang at the Edward Jones booth. Like most freelancers, I fly by the seat of my pants when it comes to money (just try getting paid on time each month by clients…urgh!) so I’m sure they can offer me some great advice for retaining and growing at least a small investment portfolio – I really need some serious $s for that old folks home in my near future LOL!  www.edwardjones.ca20171112_124239(0)And while we’re on the subject of ageing, I was pleased to see this booth promoting in-home assistance to those suffering with dementia and Alzheimers. It’s a US-concept that has now come to Canada. You gotta check out services they offer to assist and enrich the lives of our elderly loved ones. www.SeniorHelpers.ca20171112_125142_001 20171112_125223So I was finally pooped out…exhausted…after two and a half hours of walking the aisles and ready for home and a cup of my favourite Lapsang Suchong tea. I hope you like this virtual visit to the National Women’s Show here in Toronto – hope to see you there next year.  Here are a few more sights from the last day of the show.20171112_113913 20171112_111109 20171112_113434 20171112_115056 20171112_114238 20171112_121133

URBAN GALLERY LAUNCHES ITS ANNUAL PRIDE GROUP SHOW IN TORONTO

What a wonderful showcase of multi-media artworks from four talented Toronto-based artists from the LGBT community!!  Congratulations to URBAN GALLERY and its curator Allen Shugar, for presenting an outstanding exhibition of paintings, text-based graphics, digital and acrylic on canvas art celebrating this year’s annual PRIDE month.  I got there nice and early and had the gallery to myself to record a quick video walk-around:

The first artist to arrive at the gallery was the charming Eugene Nam whose striking large format acrylic-on-canvas works were both powerful and beautiful. The textural quality of his work was such that I wanted to reach out and touch the brushstrokes…..but I resisted!20170610_135912 20170610_134428 20170610_134503 20170610_134610Eugene came to Toronto a few years ago from S. Korea, via San Francisco. I asked him why he left the city by the bay to come all the way to Toronto and he told me….  In South Korea, our sexual identity must be kept hidden – homosexuality is not openly tolerated. As soon as I could, I left and went to the U.S. to pursue my passion for painting but once I heard of Toronto’s attitude of acceptance and inclusion, I knew that’s where I belonged. Since arriving, I have felt such freedom to live, love and create. I’m so happy to participate in Urban Gallery’s showcase so I can share my feelings with you all through my work.  20170610_135902(0)The next artist to arrive was TV and commercial producer Barbara Zumer whose love of creative writing and words she now showcases in her art.20170610_134402 20170610_140527One of Barbara’s pieces is actually printed on a mirror so I had a bit of fun with it…just so happens I recently had my hair done so the message is very appropriate, don’t you think?  LOL20170610_134358I was definitely pulled towards the digital anime-like images created by the very tall Jeffrey Mason (below).20170610_140557(0)His whimsical and wild illustrations of cat-like pop culture icons created quite the stir – people chuckled as they gazed at the instantly recognizable references…20170610_13410020170610_134111_001 Jeffrey also published a book of his work and copies were quickly snapped up by gallery visitors.20170610_140616Former digital producer and part-time teacher at Centennial College, Hank Blondeau (below) is exhibiting some pretty striking images….20170610_14184220170610_134133…below is Hank’s pair of huge digital art prints titled Lightimage Left and Lightimage Right20170610_134203 20170610_141830Do these stripes make me look thin?20170610_144201There was something for every taste in art and I must say, it’s one of my favourite shows in recent months.20170610_140814 20170610_141723 20170610_140824 20170610_140958 20170610_141649Even the catering, courtesy of Urban Source Catering, looked like works of art…and it all tasted simply delicious!20170610_135023 20170610_135027 20170610_135032 20170610_135038 20170610_135043 20170610_135055(0) 20170610_135101 20170610_135113(0)The PROUD ART show runs until June 30th and I encourage you to visit in person to view all of the above and more.  URBAN GALLERY is located at 400 Queen St East, Toronto – just East of Parliament St.  www.urbangallery.ca

But hurry…the art is selling quickly. Jeffrey’s Bunny Sushi already has a red dot on it!!20170610_141958

Join me for a tasty trip to the TORONTO BAKERS’ MARKET!

If only we had a “taste-o-vision” app where you could actually “taste” the yummy food photographs. Well, I’ll do my best for you here as I take you for a walk around the brand new TORONTO BAKERS’ MARKET held monthly in Leslieville www.torontobakersmarket.com

When I arrived at the market on Queen East just past Broadview at 12 noon, there was a line-up of hungry shoppers all excited to see what deelish treats awaited us inside. The doors were opened and we were welcomed by one of the organizers, Kathleen, so why don’t I let her tell you about it before we head inside….

Now let’s walk thru the doors and see who’s there…20160724_120206First off, I said hello to Katarina of Dolled Up Desserts (above), a local gluten-free and vegan bakery www.dolledupdesserts.com  Lots of dainty dolled-up treats here!
Next to Katarina were the fun ladies of Jammy Dodger, a bakery specializing in “whimsy and yum”. Check out these crazy Benedict Cumberbatcheos (below).  www.jammydodgerbakery.com20160724_120250 20160724_120257Then the next booth was deadly for me…they offered sticky toffee buns. I was proud of myself that I resisted…sort of. I only bought one from the Sugar Rush Bakery (below).  It’s already disappeared, tho, so apologies for not posting a close-up. Trust me it was deeeelicious!  You can follow them on Instagram: @sugarrushto20160724_120309Holy Cannoli was a very popular booth – I kept seeing shoppers walking around the hall with freshly stuffed cannolis courtesy of these cheerful bakers (below). www.holy-cannoli.com 20160724_120410 20160724_120415By this time, most of us needed a quick cuppa coffee to counter the sugar overload and Sparkplug Coffee certainly delivered. In fact, that’s what they do – coffee delivered to your office or home.  www.sparkplugcoffee.com20160724_120428Back to some serious nibbling…. next up, Molly’s the Bar Bakeshop.  Lots of yummy (and healthy!) bars to enjoy.  You can follow them on Instagram at @mollysbars20160724_12052320160724_120539Franny & Co. (below) offered some elegant and very decadent desserts, all gluten free, sugar free, plant-based and with sustainable ingredients. www.frannyandco.com 20160724_120616I was completely charmed by Sol Cookies (below) – a Toronto-based Peruvian bakery that incorporates some exciting “secret” ingredients (eg. anise) that really elevate them to a whole other level. Here are some tiny sample cookies – they have a soft shortbread quality to them with a special filling. Definitely recommend checking this company out. www.solcookies.ca20160724_120713 20160724_120720More cheery bakers welcomed me to the Fancy AF Small Batch Cookery booth with their cookies and fresh biscottis. Like all the vendors today, she had a big happy smile on her face. Everyone in the hall seemed to be smiling which made shopping all the more enjoyable. 20160724_121123Oh yummm…here’s Monkey Butter, the gourmet peanut butter company and oh what fab packaging! Aaaah, that should get me thru to the end of this foodie trail! Founder Michelle Spring is a holistic baker and nutritionist – guess I should have asked her about my own diet which was definitely challenged today! www.arealhandful.com 20160724_12180920160724_121817 20160724_121822The Blue Eyed Baker certainly added a little eye-candy to the market (ladies, any man who bakes this good is a treasure, blue-eyed or not). URBANSOURCE CREATIVE CATERING SPONSORS FOOD & REFRESHMENTS FOR INSIDE OUT 2016 Toronto LGBT Film Festival Launch Party

This past Friday evening, URBANSOURCE CREATIVE CATERING, one of Toronto’s leading catering companies (established 31 years ago) sponsored the sumptuous repast at this year’s INSIDE OUT/LGBT FILM FESTIVAL (May 26-June 5) VIP launch party hosted in the St. James Cathedral Centre.

I arrived just as Urban’s friendly kitchen staff were plating the hors d’oeuvres (below) and prepping the wine bar20160506_172802 20160506_172808 20160506_173226With the help of Urban’s Sales & Business Mgr. Wayne Abell (below, 3rd from L) I was able to wrangle the kitchen staff out front for a special photo opp (below)….20160506_174157(0)…and then enjoyed the fun as guests filled the party room, enjoying the photobooth and great music.20160506_180303(0) 20160506_173949 20160506_180244The delicious hot & cold hors d’oeuvre included pulled pork sliders, Cajun salmon cakes topped with comeback sauce, Arancini risotto balls (or as I like to call them “cheesy balls”) filled with gooey buffalo mozzarella cheese served with roasted chipotle pepper sauce (below, enjoyed by guests)…20160506_180903 20160506_184613….Greek potatoes with feta, olives, pickled onion and tzatziki, garnished with chives…don’t they look pretty? (below)20160506_181037 20160506_181043(0)…and also Moroccan Chicken Rouelles topped with mango salsa, Pissaladière Blanco on herbed Provençale crust  and Spanish Tortilla with roasted peppers, egg, potato and Manchego cheese topped with tomato jam. Yummmm,  guests couldn’t get enough of the tasty treats so the kitchen staff kicked it into high gear….20160506_182652 20160506_182704Even the press photographers were delighted by the food service (below)20160506_180221Wayne enjoyed networking, too – here he is at the photo wall with Inside Out’s Brad and Scott (LtoR)20160506_174825That photobooth was a real party favourite with guests dressing up and acting silly. Here are a few perfect examples of the perfect party guests….20160506_18145620160506_182837 20160506_182959…and of course, I just HAD to get into the act, too. Always the party princess….!20160506_173648_001Apart from all the fun and frivolity, there were the more serious chores of announcing this year’s film line-up, the complete InsideOut festival program and shout-outs to esteemed supporters, sponsors and guests, MC’d by Todd van der Heyden, news anchor with CTV News Channel.20160506_184218 20160506_184222Urban’s service volunteers really enjoyed their jobs, such as Neal (below) who had two lovely ladies flanking him and helping serve the wine.20160506_180453

THE SUN WILL COME OUT TOMORROW ….AND THE STARS CAME OUT LAST NIGHT

Last night, FIFE HOUSE presented their annual “Spotlight” concert and fundraising gala (produced by Michael Rubinoff) at the Glenn Gould Studio in downtown Toronto and their guests of honour were the incomparable ANDREA McCARDLE (Broadway’s original Annie) with the equally amazing musical genius SETH RUDETSKY. They chatted about Andrea’s incredible career in musical theatre and Seth accompanied her on piano as she belted out hit after hit. Wow!

My friends at URBANSOURCE CATERING presented platters of the most delicious, scrumptious hors d’oeuvres throughout the pre-concert reception, ferried by an army of friendly servers who kept the goodies coming!20151127_181249 20151127_180149 20151127_180308Calvin Hambrook, Urban’s Catering & Events Manager, ensured everything went smoothly and he enjoyed schmoozing with the guests, many of whom are long-time clients of Urban. Below, here’s Calvin (l) with Fife Hosue’s Dir. of Development & Communications David Currah (r).20151127_175301 Apart from the amazing concert, there was also a fabulous silent auction featuring tons of donated prizes including a framed photo (titled “Quietude” 20” x 30” photoprint on Dibond) by Urban Gallery’s own Kaspara Albertsen, perfect for the festive season….here’s just a few of them:QUIETUDE by Kaspara Albertsen20151127_173004 20151127_172938 20151127_173426
